How one tweet can ruin your life | Jon Ronson in 2022

laatste update: 09-2022

For the longest time Jon Ronson reveled in the fact that Twitter gave a voice to the voiceless … the social media platform gave us all a chance to speak up and hit back at perceived injustice. But somewhere along the way, things took a turn. In this passionate, eloquent talk, Ronson explains how too often we end up behaving like a baying mob — and that it’s time to rethink how we interact with others online.

30 gedachten over “How one tweet can ruin your life | Jon Ronson in 2022”

  1. Half a decade later and this issue gets worse. Cancel culture became a norm and a meme on Twitter. I get that she was just making dark humour but she should not get this inhumane treatment. People these days have no second thoughts what to type anymore.

  2. I thought it was a 2022 video… 2015… waoh… simply true.

  3. "Devalued term." That's a good one. As in: people have devalued the term "racist" so thoroughly, they've likely ensured its continued existence.

  4. My name is Ron Jonson, so in a way I am the complete opposite to this man

  5. T’as rien compris quand s’était le temps….. Pauvre petite victime , j’ai vraiment pitié pour toi 😢😭😶‍🌫️🥶🤡

  6. I dont feel at all sorry for her…when you say something to the whole world sometimes the world chimes back

  7. 7 years later,
    nothing 's changed.

  8. Social media is becoming a self-circled joke.
    You cant say anything neutral,
    it's all liberal jokes.
I agree with the end sentence judge a person by personality not ideologies.
I've met leftists who are terrible in real life but are good at playing social media games.
We are humans who live in grey area in life.
And there so many nuances of a person you can only observe in real life.
it's also hard to give benefit of a doubt online.

  9. Any time I feel the urge to attack on twitter I think of the 'shame' scene in Game of Thrones & stop:) Shame that being judgmental is all the rage.

  10. I listened to BBC radio 4 desert island discs today, this guy was on it, I thought he was interesting, which is more interesting than this comment

  11. That first woman does sound thoroughly objectionable though, from those two tweets at least.

Anyway, America IS THE THIRD WORLD (modern definition). Which shows in how they think ‘Africa’ is a country… Lots and lots of Africa is far more developed than the US these days so her explanation of the joke is still wildly off the mark. There’s also better infrastructure in those countries in Africa. Yanks suffer from a form of the very much over-talked-about D.K. Effect, they think that they’re massively advanced in comparison to the rest of the world when in actual fact, the exact opposite is the truth. Dial-up internet in 2022 anyone? Just go to Yankeedoodlestan, a real life 3️⃣®d 🌍 💩 🕳.

Alabama has more poverty than most of what is considered by moron America to be terrible places to live. Look how their government treated those poor souls following Hurricane Katrina. They’re all told that they’re the best and because they’re so well indoctrinated with American Civil Religion, they believe it. That is while being able to see that it’s not true. Their roads are falling to bits. Their water supplies are running out and the whole of the US is going to sharply implode in the not at all distant future.

  12. This video should’ve focused more on not being a d*ck rather than complaining about repercussions of being a d*ck.

  13. People are monsters. Jesus christ, she just told a bad and mean joke. They act as if she murdered someone.

  14. i will be saying the N word and other slurs anywhere i want at any time i want, and none of u can stop me.

  15. Thank you for this, because this thing just happened to me yesterday. I impulsively and stupidly sent a trans activist a nasty DM, and she blasted me in front of her 700 followers and got them to contact my employer and get me fired. I can't eat or sleep, I don't even feel like getting out of my chair. I'm saddened and horrified that this has happened to me with no consequences whatsoever for my abusers. Cancel culture is incredibly toxic and it's one of the things I hate about modern society.

  16. Thank god I’ve never used twitter in my life. That’s all I’d need.
